Pregnancy and the months after birth bring a lot of change, and your bra size can change with them, sometimes more than once. A good nursing bra makes feeding easier and helps you feel comfortable during a very busy time.

What makes a nursing bra different

A nursing (or feeding) bra lets you open one cup at a time, usually with a simple clip or fold-down panel, so you can feed without taking the whole bra off. It is also designed with comfort and flexibility in mind, because breast size can change through the day.

What to look for

  • Wire-free support. Soft, wireless styles are widely recommended while breastfeeding, as they avoid pressure on sensitive tissue.
  • Easy one-handed opening. You'll often be holding your baby with the other hand.
  • Stretch and adjustability. Stretchy cups and several hook positions allow for changes in size.
  • Soft, breathable fabric. Gentle on skin that may be more sensitive than usual.
  • Light padding. Adds shape and discretion under everyday clothes.

When to buy

Many mothers buy their first nursing bra in the later months of pregnancy, once their size has mostly settled, and then check the fit again a few weeks after birth. Buying one or two to start with, rather than a full set, gives you room to adjust.

Getting the fit right

Measure using the same method as any bra (our measuring guide walks you through it), but choose a fit that feels comfortable on the loosest or middle hook, to leave room for change. The band should feel supportive without being tight.

Every body is different If you have any pain, discomfort or questions about breastfeeding, please speak to your doctor or a lactation professional. This guide is about comfort and fit, not medical advice.
